Lumia Statement on Uvalde, TX, Violence

As the little ones whose lives were cut short are laid to rest in Uvalde, parents, family, community members, will continue on - and live with unbearable loss.

June 1, 2022

To our community,

Grief is not a one time event.  As the little ones whose lives were cut short are laid to rest in Uvalde, parents, family, community members, will continue on - and live with unbearable loss.  In the United States, teachers and students face certain unease as the last few weeks of school wind down and the debate around gun ownership continues to rage, dividing us from each other even more deeply.

As we seek to understand what happened in Uvalde, anger, confusion, and feelings of helplessness are normal and appropriate. Parents, students, teachers and anyone who supports learning environments are especially vulnerable to big feelings right now and the quick passage of time is simply not enough to help us move forward.  So much is being called for in our time - humans as a species are being shown to care less and less about each other and yet there are many of us that care so much, and feel so deeply about the pain and injustice plaguing our world that days can often feel dark, everyday tasks are just a little harder, and sweet, good times give just a little less respite.

Knowing this, deep compassion is called for, for each other and for the self. It is impossible to quite simply carry on, when our hearts and minds are so burdened. Community is more important now than ever to help us lighten the load, share laughter and good will, and tune into what we can do to tidy our own corner of the world, savor, or celebrate.  It might be as simple as a warm cup of coffee with an old friend on the phone, or an exquisite sunset shared by everyone happening down the same road at the same time.  We are connected in so many positive ways and can weave these golden threads into a sustainable chord that will offer steady support as one day folds into the next.

Please take care to be kind to each other as we never know what might lie just below the surface for others. Please take care to be kind to yourself and don’t deny anything that is sitting just below the surface that needs tending to.

Thank you for showing up to be a coach and a helper,
