Lumia Coaching may have changed names, but the heart and soul of our life coach training remains the same.
On March 9th, 2022, we took a bold step forward. And while our name may have changed, the heart and soul of our coach training program remain the same.
Where We Began
In the early 2010’s, John Kim (The Angry Therapist) had gone through a divorce and a long journey to become a therapist. He was tired of the difficulties and red tape and envisioned another way of helping people – coaching. He met his coaching clients for hikes and at coffee shops, and found that his way of connecting with others was making an impact.
On the other end of the country, Noelle Cordeaux was deep in the world of research and academia, having explored many different coach training programs. Her own coaching practice was flourishing and she wanted to help others discover the world of positive psychology and the transformative power of coaching.
John Kim and Noelle Cordeaux joined forces and in 2014, began playing around with different ways of helping others to learn the skills that had changed their own lives. Along with a merry band of co-collaborators, they launched a coach training program designed to break the mold and help others become the kind of coaches that make an impact.
From these modest beginnings, we’ve trained nearly 2,000 coaches to date. Along the way we’ve experimented, iterated, learned and evolved… developing the Signature ICF accredited coach training program that you see today.
Why the Name Change?
JRNI is a name we’ve loved, and it reflected where we were at the time. But with repeated use we realized that it’s hard to say, can be hard for people to find us, and has never really fit us perfectly as a community.
So we searched for a word that would capture our true collective: a community of bright, progressive coaches who are making a difference in the world, and shining a light for others. We also wanted the new name to reflect our shared commitment to shining a light on the coaching profession as it, too, grows and expands.
Introducing: Lumia
As a young company, we’ve grown right alongside our brilliant community of coaches and change makers. Together we stand on the precipice of a revolution, intent on creating a world where all human beings have the resources and support they need to flourish.
We believe our new name reflects both who we are, and what is yet to come.
Aperture + Sunlight + Navigation = LUMIA
Lumia’s brand icon is a convergence of metaphors, which together represent what our collective is all about.
APERTURE: A momentary but critical opening that lets light into an otherwise dark space, creating a new image of possibility (The “Why” of Coaching)
SUNLIGHT: The radiating rays of dawning light illuminate a new day full of bright possibilities (The “Impact” of Coaching)
NAVIGATION: New possibility is only useful if you can navigate. The cardinal directions of a compass imply both knowledge and bold adventure (The “How” of Coaching)
What’s Next on the Horizon?
Our new name is bold and bright, speaking to our future as a community.
So what can you expect in the year ahead?
- We’re going to be leaning even further into showing the world what coaching can do.
- We’re going to elevate and promote our coaches' voices, and all the many different ways you can use coaching.
- We’re going to continue forming innovative partnerships, providing even more opportunities for our graduates to make a difference within the coaching profession.
The next chapter is going to be really exciting, and we’re so glad to share it all with you.
