With transparency in the office, there’d be less hiding, less secrecy, and people will be more comfortable to be as open as they can be - whether that’s personal or work-related. And that is what a healthy workplace looks like. That said, it’s not easy to practice transparency. Like any skill, it takes time and effort. It requires practice. But the benefits of being transparent to your people, as a leader, it’s priceless. There's a line between vulnerability and strength -- too vulnerable, and people won't trust you, they'll see you as careless. Being wise in how transparent you are can make all the difference.

Ask powerful questions and actually listen

Listening is probably the most basic thing we all do. Or so we think. Listening is so basic that many of us have forgotten how to do it right. We used to be good listeners. Until life happened and adulting happened and the next thing we know, we don’t listen attentively anymore. Active listening is a major skill you need to cultivate as a coach.

Which is why one of the many successful techniques out there is to get back and learn how to listen with intention. How to listen and actually hear someone. What makes an effective coach is not the long list of reviews or the fact that you’re certified, though those two are important too. It’s more on the ability to truly listen to your people and to teach them how to do the same. Success comes when everyone hears one another.

Always have clear objectives

Coaching is all about goals, co-creating the future and understanding where we're headed! While we all have objectives at work, and our employees set their own objectives as well, not all of it are clear. Because let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to get those objectives crystal clear. That said, setting clear objectives take practice, making it one of the most vital coaching skills to use in every workplace.

To hone your skills on setting clear objectives, it starts with understanding why you have that objective in the first place. Be clear on the reasoning, the end goal and the timeline. Encourage your employees to do the same, no matter how small their objectives may be. The more this is done, the easier it gets. And the less complications you’ll deal with in the office.
