Clubhouse, Tik Tok, and Instagram, Oh My!

Social media is daunting, it's scary, annnnnd it's necessary. Sorry to tell ya. Now more than ever, with everything going virtual it's crucial to have a solid online presence.

So grab your blue light glasses, a cup of joe (or tea, or a bottle of wine), and buckle up. I’m about to share some tricks of the Instagram (IG) trade and hopefully, by the end of this, you will know your first steps to becoming an influencer...

 ...just kidding.

What I AM going to do is help make sure you look like you know what you're doing. Promise.

I want to start by saying that you don’t need 10K followers to run a successful business on social media. So how many followers do you need? The number of available spots on your roster.

Seriously.

Oftentimes, we get so caught up in the cosmetic side of things. At a time when a 10-year-old performing a viral dance trend can rack up over 1 Million followers, how do you compete? How do you stand out?

Your content, that’s how. Your message. Your experiences.

Sure, having a bunch of followers is cool, and we all love the coveted “swipe up” feature. But at the end of the day, you are on social media for ONE reason. To create a community that you can speak to and help. You can do that with just 10 followers.

In December I deleted my Facebook. Come January, I deleted my personal Instagram. By February, my business started flourishing.

Prior to that, I used to spend hours “staring and comparing” and yet still expected myself to show up for my business authentically. SPOILER ALERT: It wasn't working.

Once I started using social media intentionally, I experienced some truly impressive growth in my business. Let me walk you through some things that helped me get a handle on the social media beast that we all love to hate.

Work Social Media Platforms Like A Pro

1. Protect your energy

I am going to let you in on a little secret... you don't have to follow everyone that follows you.

I know it's tough to hear.

And here's an even tougher one: you don't have to follow YOUR FRIENDS on social media either.

Here’s why I say this:

Think carefully about what you want to use IG and/or Facebook for. Is it for your personal life? Your business? Or both?

It's okay if the answer is both, but you have to make sure that what you are posting and what you are consuming aligns with how you are using your account.

If you are constantly looking at pictures that do not fuel your creativity and are draining energy (ie: filtered photos of that person you were in 8th grade with) you are not going to be able to show up for your ideal client in the best possible way.

Follow accounts that fuel your soul. Follow accounts that bring you joy. Follow accounts that make you think.

Or don't follow any accounts at all.

2. Show up like you have 100 clients

When I first started this whole social media business thing, I had one paying client. That's right. One singular soul. But if you looked at my Instagram page, you would have thought my roster was full and I was easily making 6 figures.

I am not saying “lie to your audience”. What I’m suggesting is that you need to show up with the confidence of someone who already has 100 clients.

What does that person look like? How does that person speak?

Be THAT person. Manifest that shit.

3. Quality over quantity (and aesthetic)

There are all kinds of tips and tricks when it comes to using IG "correctly". While there is truth to a lot of them, there is also some bullshit. Like this one: "You have to post every day to see results."

FALSE.

That tip in particular encourages quantity over quality. While there is truth to the value of showing up consistently... if you're not feeling it, don't post it.

As a potential client, I would much rather receive new, engaging, educational content as opposed to filler posts meant to make your feed look "organized".

4. Know this: no one is thinking about you!

I mean it. Nobody knows what they are doing. We are all too busy trying to navigate our own lives to get concerned about whether there was a typo in your caption.

Sometimes we can get so caught up in what to post and how it will look to others that we can worry ourselves into an anxiety attack and want to throw the whole thing out.

Truth? At the end of the day, if you show up unapologetically you are going to win IG.

That's it. That's all you have to do.

People buy from people, so show what you have to offer and don't worry about judgment. For every one person who hates your posts, two people are cheering you on. Trust me.

5. Define your success

When you look at your IG page, what is its purpose? What do you want to achieve? Make sure you know what your end goal is, and make sure it is clear to others as well.

If you don't do this, you are going to be working towards a goal that is in fact someone else's version of success. That's not going to serve you in the long run.

And finally…

The truth is, there is no step-by-step guide that will guarantee you business. And with so much negativity circulating on social media, it can sometimes seem best to just stay away from it altogether!

But know this: If you protect your energy, show up authentically, and focus your content on business/personal objectives... you might just end up with an IG you can be damn proud of!

When in doubt, remember that Instagram has an edit AND a delete button...so go wild!
